ATP Flashcards
What’s the structure of ATP?
- Ribose
- Adenine
- 3 phosphate groups
What’s the formula of ATP hydrolysis?
ATP → ADP + Pi
What is ATP hydrolysis catalysed by?
ATP hydrolase
How is energy released during ATP hydrolysis?
Bonds between inorganic phosphate groups are high energy bonds so by breaking one of these bids a small amount of energy is released
What can inorganic phosphates be used for?
Can be used to phosphorylate other compounds to make them more reactive e.g. glucose
What is ATP condensation catalysed by?
ATP synthase
When does ATP synthesis usually occur m?
During respiration or photosynthesis
What are the properties of ATP that make it a suitable source of energy?
-ATP only releases energy in small, manageable amounts → no energy wasted
-Only one bond is hydrolysed (single reaction) to release energy → which is why energy releases is immediate
