Atomic theory (P1) Flashcards
What do the period numbers refer to?
The number of rings on an element
How do reactivity, mp and bp change as you move down group 1?
They get more reactive because the nucleus has a weaker attraction to the electrons on the outer shell
Also lower mp and be?
How does reactivity change as you move down group 7?
They get less reactive because the nucleus has a weaker attraction to the electrons on the outer shells so it attracts electrons less
Higher melting and boiling points
.
What is an element?
It only has one type of atom, which are chemically bonded.
What is a compound?
It has two types of atoms, which are chemically bonded
What is a mixture?
It has two or more types of atoms, which aren’t chemically bonded.
What are group 1 elements known as?
Alkali metals
Group 1 with water, chlorine, oxygen
Water to hydrogen gas and metal hydroxides, more energy given out lower down
Chlorine to metal chloride salts
Oxygen to lithium oxide, oxygen and sodium to sodium oxide and peroxide na2 O2, potassium peroxide K2O2 and potassium superoxide KO2
Group 0
Noble gases, inert, colourless, unreactivd
Non-flammable
Boiling points increase as you move down as there are more electrons so more intermolecular forces between them
