Atmosphere: Oceanic Circulation points Flashcards
1
Q
How do currents move on the surface and in what direction?
A
On the surface, currents move in loops known as gyres which move clockwise in the North Atlantic
2
Q
Where do warm currents move water from? (& example mark!!)
A
Warm currents take warm water from the equator to the poles (e.g The North Atlantic Drift)
3
Q
Where do cold currents take cool water from and to? (& example mark- dog)
A
Cold currents take cooler water from the poles to the equator (e.g Labrador current)
4
Q
What are currents influenced by?
A
Currents are influenced by prevailing winds
5
Q
What does the coriolis effect do in the northern hemisphere?
A
The coriolis effect deflects currents to the right in the northern hemisphere
