ATI Enteral Tube Terms Flashcards
aspiration
- inadvertent inhalation of fluid or other substances into the lungs
- withdrawal or removal via a syringe, etc., of a substance or material from the body
carina
- projection of lowest tracheal cartilage
- forms prominent semilunar ridge anteroposteriorly between the orifices of the two bronchi
duodenum
- first or proximal part of small intestine
- extends from pylorus to jejunum
esophagus
musculomembranous passage extending from pharynx to stomach
formula
- mixture of nutrients in liquid form
- enteral formulas to be delivered to stomach or intestines via enteral tube
gastric aspirate
substance or material removed from the pt’s stomach via syringe through a NG or gastrostomy tube
gastrostomy tube
- tube inserted through a surgically created opening into the stomach
- functions as a conduit for delivering enteral feedings
jejunostomy tube
- tube inserted through a surgically created opening into the jejunum
- conduit for delivering enteral feedings
mucous membrane
moist inner lining of various tubular structures: mouth, esophagus, stomach, and intestines
naris
one of the two external orifices of the nose; nostril (plural: nares)
nasogastric tube
- flexible tube inserted through the nose and extending to the stomach
- serves as conduit for delivering enteral feedings, meds, relieving pressure, etc.
nasoduodenal tube
- flexible tube inserted through the nose and extending to the duodenum
- primarily a conduit for enteral feedings
nasointestinal tube
- flexible tube inserted through the nose and extending to the intestines
- primarily a conduit for enteral feedings
nasojejunal tube
- flexible tube inserted through the nose and extending to the jejunum
- primarily a conduit for enteral feedings
nasopharynx
part of the pharynx that lies above the soft palate
percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube
- tube inserted through an endoscopically created opening into the stomach
- conduit for enteral feedings
percutaneous endoscopic jejunostomy (JPEG) tube
- tube inserted through an endoscopically created opening into the jejunum
- conduit for enteral feedings
pH
- measure of acidity or alkalinity of a substance
- low pH = acidity
- high pH = alkalinity
- measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions
trachea
cartilaginous and membranous tube descending from the larynx and branching into the right and left main bronchi
uvula
the small, fleshy mass hanging from the soft palate above the root of the tongue
