Definition of Common Assault
Section 39 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988:
Any act by which a person intentionally or recklessly causes another to apprehend immediate unlawful violence
Definition of Battery
Section 39 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988:
The intentional or reckless application of unlawful force to another person.
Definition of Assault (ABH)
Section 47 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861:
Any assault occasioning actual bodily harm to another.
Definition of Assault (GBH) without intent
Section 20 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861:
To unlawfully and maliciously wound or inflict any grievous bodily harm upon any other person, either with or without any weapon or instrument.
Definition of Assault (GBH) with intent
Section 18 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861:
To unlawfully and maliciously, by any means whatsoever, wound or inflict any grievous bodily harm upon any other person, with intent to inflict GBH or with intent to resist or prevent the lawful apprehension or detainer of any person.
