Cultural Competence
a set of therapist variables that include the capacity for the therapist to be self-aware in regard to his own stuff
Intersectionality
Every person is more than the most obvious component of his/her identity, & these mixtures occur in a variety of ways
Social Locations
aspects of self that inform identity even when they are invisible to others, relating together in a variety of ways
Awareness
primarily cognitive function, consciousness of a thought or action and processing intellectually (as opposed to sensitivity)
Sensitivity
primarily affective function, responding emotionally to stimuli with delicacy and respectfulness (as opposed to awareness)
Culture of Origin
Major group/s from which a person descended that were the first generation to come to the US, or Native American
Organizing Principles
fundamental constructs which shape perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors of members of a particular group (free of negative or positive connotation)
Pride/Shame Issues
aspects of a culture sanctioned as distinctly negative or positive
racial/ethnic socialization
the way in which parents pass info, values, and perspectives about ethnicity and race to their children
ethnic group
people who share a common culture, religion, language, or nationality
cultural socialization
transmission of cultural values, knowledge, and practices
preparation for bias
preparing youths for discrimination
promotion of mistrust
practices that emphasize the need for wariness and distrust in interracial interactions
mainstream socialization
parents either explicitly encourage their children to value individual qualities over racial group membership or avoid any mention of race in discussions with their children; rather than orienting youths toward their native culture or toward their minority status, they orient youths toward developing skills and characteristics needed to thrive in settings that are part of the mainstream, or dominant, culture
