what was the phalanx
it was the main greek way of fighting and was a tight rectangle shape and would charge and thrust, if the front fell the man behind stepped up. was tricky because if it broke it completely shattered
differences between spartan and athentian armies
sparta was funded for all soldiers to act the same whenn in athens it was a class thing
athens had specific trainings like calavry
what percent of athenian soliders had certain positions in the army
30-50% had the funds for a full hoplite and hence phalanx position
the other 70-50% were wearing anything from leather to cloth and fought with stones, spears or swords acting as close fighters or held of armies from high grounds
they also had riich soldiers trained as cavalry who would attack enemy phalax and act as messangers
