Areas of Occupation & ADL Evals Flashcards
Evaluation should follow a ______ approach
Top-down: meaning we look at the areas of occupation first
Areas of occupation
Various life activities in which people, populations or organizations engage; including: BADLs/PADLs, IADLs, Work, Education, Play/Leisure, Social participation; Rest/Sleep.
First step in eval
Occupational Profile: Obtaining am understanding of the clients personal hx, experiences, patterns of daily living, interests, values & needs
Desired outcome of eval
ID of persons OP concerns/difficulties and est. of individual priorities
Analysis of Occupational Performance
Observation of persons actual performance of an activity in actual context - if not practical, simulation
Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS) focuses on assessment of the
Effectiveness, efficiency or safety of a persons ADL task performance including PADLs, IADLs and some leisure activities.
AMPS Method
Interview to determine 3-5 tasks relevant/challenging to pt.; selection of 2-3 tasks by pt.; observation of quality of performance (standardized) in natural/closely simulated environment (culturally diverse); AMPs training course must be completed
The AMPS uses what type of scale?
4-pt ordinal
1=low
4=high
AMPS population
Anyone with a developmental age older than 2y/o with any diagnosis that causes functional limitations with ADLs
Barthel Index focuses on measurement of
A persons independence in BADLs and fx’al mob before and after intervention and the level of personal cared needed by the individual
Barthel Index Items
- Feeding, 2. Transferring, 3. Personal grooming, 4. Tolieting, 5. Control of Bowel &, 6. Bladder, 7. Bathing, 8.Dressing, 9. Walking on level ground, 10. Negotiating and climbing stairs.
Barthel Index Method
Direct observation, interview of individual/caregivers and/or review of medical records
Weighted system used to score, max score is 10,
Barthel Index Population
Adults & elders with physical disabilities and/or chronic illness
Typically used is medical model setting
Cognitive Performance Test (CPT) focuses on assessment of
6 fx’al ADL tasks that require cognitive processing skills based on Allen’s Cog Disabilities Model
1. Dressing, 2. Shopping., 3. Making Toast, 4. Making a call, 5. Washing, 6. Traveling
CPT Method
Standardized admin procedures; OT askes pt. to do task and offers what is needed for the pt. for task performance
(demo, reassurance, cues, more directions, elim of sensory info)
Standardized info for materials
CPT scoring
Based on Allen’s levels: 1 = low & 6 = highest - can score between 6-36
CPT population
Adults and elders with psychiatric and/or cog dysfun.
FIM System/WeeFIM focus is on the assessment of the
Severity of a disability as determined by what the individual actually does and the amount of assistance needed to complete each task
6 Performance areas addressed by FIM/WeeFIM
- Self care: feeding, toileting, B&B mngt, grooming, bathing, dressing
- Sphincter control: B&B control
- Mobility: Bed/chair/wc, toliet, tub/shower transfers
- Locomo: walking, using stairs, using wc
- Communication: expression/comp
- Social Cog: social interaction, memory, prob solve
WeeFIM is for
3-7 y/o
Less than 3 y/o uses a 1= rare, 2= sometimes, 3= usually scale
FIM/WeeFIM is scored on a scale of
1 (dependent) - 7 (independent)
FIM/WeeFIM population
FIM - adults with disabilities
WeeFIM - children 6mo-7 with intell. abilities less than typical
Katz Index of ADL foucs
Assessment of level of independent functioning/type of assistance needed in 6 areas:
1. Bathing, 2. Dressing, 3. Toileting, 4. Transferring, 5. Continence, 6. Feeding
Observation and interview
Katz scoring
Individual ratings are converted into global letter score 1=A=Indep, 7=G=Dep & 8=Other
Katz population
Adults and elders with chronic illness
