ADL Evals Flashcards
Kitchen Task Assessment (KTA) focus
Measurement of the judgment, planning and organizational skills used to perform a simple cooking task
KTA Method
Pre-test of hand washing, observes pt. making cooked pudding from mix, large print instructions used, OT can provide assistance if needed
KTA Scoring
0=Indep, 1=Verbal assistance, 2=Physical assistance, 3=totally incapable
Evaluated on: Initiation, organization, performing all steps, proper sequence, judgement/safety & completion of task
Final scores range from 0-18; higher numbers=^ impairment
KTA Population
Originally developed from adults/elders with senile dementia of the Alzheimer type - expanded to use with other pops with cog dysfun.
Klien-Bell Activities of Daily Living Scale (K-B scale) focus
Assessment of independent functioning in ADLs as evidenced by achievement of 170 items in 6 areas: dressing, elimination, mobility, bathing/hygiene, eating & emergency telephone communication
Used to increase caregivers understanding of assistance level
K-B Scale Scoring
Method: Observation and AE is allowed
Achieved (indep/w.o AE) or Failed (phys/verb/AE)
K-B Scale Population
Individuals from 6mo-elderly with and dx (physical, psychosoc, cognitive and/or developmental)
Kohlman Eval of Living Skills (KELS) focus
Determine of pt. knowledge and/or performance of 17 basic living skills needed to live independently in 5 main areas: Self care, safety/health, money mngt, transportation/telephone, work/leisure.
KELS can provide general overview of person’s functional level and give a baseline for further eval/intervention.
KELS Method
OT provides standard instructions for pt to complete task, OT uses standard questions to obtain the individuals self report of performance, NO additional instructions or feedback
KELS Scoring
Independent or needs assistance
Total score of 5.5 or less indicates presence of skills for independent living, total score of 6 or more indicates absence of skills for independent living.
Separate Community Support Scale exists.
KELS Population
Originally used for adolescents/adults in acute psych settings but expanded to elders and those with a diversity of dx in a variety of settings
Milwaukee Eval of Daily Living Skills (MEDLS) focus
Assessment of actual/simulated performance of BADLs needed to function in the individuals expected environment: 1. Basic communication, 2. Personal Care (toileting)/Hygiene (tooth-brushing), 3. Med mngt, 4. Personal health care (eye glasses), 5. Time awareness, 6. Eating, 7. Dressing, 8. Safety in home &, 9. Community, 10. Use of telephone, 11. Transportation, 12. Screening used to determine which subtests are relevant to individual and his/her expected environment and needed items are admin in standardized form & have a time limit - recommended to be done during normal am routine
Scoring is based on standard criteria
MEDLS Population
Originally developed for adults with chronic MI, residing in tx center or attending out pt for 2 years but expanded to other pops with ADL deficits
Routine Task Inventory (RTI) focus
Measure of individuals level of impairment in activities of daily living according Allen’s
