William Fulbright
September 1955 - moved 21 African Americans into school system.
No problems until segregationists from there and outside of the community formed a protest.
Integration photographed in Life magazine, causing segregationists from other states to arrive to support protest.
Hoxie
(Franklin County) in September 1954 - first district in the ‘old south’ to comply with Brown vs. Board of Education decision.
Charleston
integrated 3 weeks after Charleston with 6 African American students
Fayetteville
Little Rock’s original desegregation plan.
Designed to desegregate schools slowly, starting with Central High School.
Put off action until 1957.
Focused only on Central High School in lower income area of city.
Blossom Plan
Was the head of the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission. He started a large ranch on top of Petit Jean Mountain and became active in civic and cultural affairs.
Winthrop Rockefeller
Elected to Congress in 1937. He went through an embarrassing public scandal involving Fannie Fox. He also had a problem with alcoholism, but he went on to be an outspoken leader against alcohol and drug abuse.
