Applied Anatomy and Physiology - Gas Exchange Flashcards
What is gas exchange?
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide by the process of diffusion
What is diffusion?
The movement of gas from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure
What is the difference between an area of high pressure and area of low pressure called?
Diffusion gradient
What is partial pressure?
The pressure of one gas within a mixture of gases
What is the partial pressure of oxygen?
pO2
What is the partial pressure of carbon dioxide?
pCO2
What is the external site for gas exchange?
In the lungs between the blood capillaries and the alveoli
What is the internal site for gas exchange?
In the muscle cell between the capillaries and muscle cell
How does oxygen move down the diffusion gradient during external inspiration?
pO2 105 - alveoli
pO2 40 - capillary blood
=65mmHg
Where is the oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood in the external site?
deoxygentaged blood arrives in the blood capillaries and there is oxygen-rich atmospheric air in the alveoli
Where is the oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood in the internal site?
oxygenated blood arrives in the capillaries and the muscle cells produce carbon dioxide
How does carbon dioxide move down the diffusion gradient during external inspiration?
pCO2 46 - capillary
pCO2 40 - alveoli
How does oxygen move down the diffusion gradient in the internal site?
pO2 100 - capillary
pO2 40 - muscle cell
