Appendix D (Sound Reinforcement) Flashcards
what is electricity
the flow of electrons through wires and circuits
what is voltage
a measurement of electrical pressure or potential as compared to a zero ground potential. potential energy. measured in volts
what are volts
a unit of electromotive force or electrical pressure.
what is one volt equal to
the pressure required to send one ampere of current through a resistance of one ohm
what is current
a measurement of how many electrons pass through a reference point each second.
what is current measured in
ampere
what is an ampere
(A) or (I) is the basic unit of electrical current
what is resistance?
the property of a conductor that determines the amount of current that will flow as a result of a given electromotive force
what is a resistor
a device specifically built for the purpose of limiting current flow
what is an ohm
the unit of electrical resistance
what is impedance
(Z) the total opposition offered to the flow of an alternating current
what is ground
the electrical reference against which voltages are expressed
what are the three types of ground
earth
signal
and chassis
what is earth ground
ground that uses the electrical presence of the earth as a reference
what is signal ground
reference point in which signal potentials (voltages) in a specific piece of equipment such as a microphone are expressed
what is chassis ground
any conductor that is connected to the devices chassis. Chassis ground ultimately drains to earth ground
what is power?
the rate of doing work or rate of expanding energy.
what is the unit of power?
watt
what is a watt?
it represents the amount of work that is performed through heat dissipation
what is a watt equal to?
one joule of energy per second
what is a multi meter?
a device that measures voltage, electronic current, and resistance within a variety of different ranges of values
what does a multi meter look like?

what is a volt tester?
AKA test lamp, determines the presence of electric voltage

what is a decibel?
DB. a unit used to measure the intensity of a sound or the power level of an electric signal by comparing it to a given level on a logarithmic scale.
What is dB SPL
measure of sound pressure in decibels.
what is 0 dB SPL
threshold for human hearing
what is 130 dB SPL
threshold for pain
what is an audio signal?
an electrical representation of sound in the form of a fluctuating voltage or current
what are standard operating levels?
the amount of power needed to drive the signal coming from a particular source
microphone level?
the lowest level. range from no signal to -20 dBu
line level range?
range is -20dBu to 30+ dBu.
what operates at line level?
the mixing console operates at this level as does most signal processing and electric keyboards
speaker level range?
highest level +30 dBu
what outputs at line level?
power amplifiers
what is gain
gain is the increase in amplitude of a signal
what is gain expressed in
dB
what is attenuation
a reduction of the amplitude of a signal
what is nominal?
the operating level at which an electronic signal processing device is designed to operate
