What is a APGAR score used to assess?
to assess the health of a new born baby
At what time in minutes is the APGAR score assessed at after birth?
1 minute then 5 minutes and then repeated in 10 minutes if the APGAR score is low
What does a low APGAR score mean?
poor health of baby
lower the score the more concern
What 5 components are measured in APGAR?
- pulse
- Respiratory effort
- Colour
- Muscle tone
- Reflex irritability
What scores a 2 on pulse?
A pulse > 100
What scores a 2 on respiratory effort?
strong, cry
What scores a 2 on colour?
pink
What scores 2 on Muscle tone?
active movement
What scores a 2 on reflex irritability?
cries on stimulation
sneezes
coughs
What scores a 1 on pulse?
< 100
What scores a 1 on respiratory effort?
weak, irregular
What scores a 1 on colour?
body pink
extremities blue
What score is 1 on muscle tone?
limb flexion
What is score 1 in regards to reflex irritability?
grimace
What score is 0 on pulse?
absent
