Q

What is the function of cilia in the respiratory tract?

A

traps dirt and mucus, pushing mucus upwards out of the trachea

Q

What happens when the olfactory epithelium is shed?

A

when you have a cold this happens, causing your appetite to be lost

this lasts for a while after the cold passes while axons re-form from basal stem cells

Q

What are the characteristic of alveolar type 1 cells?

A

highly attenuated
organelles grouped around nucleus, reducing thickness for the larger part of the cell
pinocytotic veicles for surfactant turnover
tight junctions limiting fluid release

Q

What happens during childbirth to the lungs?

A
  1. movement expels fluid out of foetus’ lungs
  2. lungs are distended, releasing NO (secreted by endothelial wall of pulmonary arteries)
  3. this increases dilation of pulmonary artery and pulmonary capillary network and decreases blood pressure
  4. increases blood flow from right ventricle to pulmonary aorta
  5. blood pressure in right arium compared to left atrium decreases
  6. functional closure of the foramen secundum

10
Q

What does the foramen secundum do?

A

it allows blood to enter the left atrium from the right atrium

it closes after child birth allowing blood to pass through to the lungs

Q

From what age is surfactant produced?

A

34th week onwards

if this does not happen, the heart can’t develop properly

14
Q

What are the effects of emphysema on breathing capabilities?

A

damage to alveoli decreases lung compliance, making it less able to resist the expansive forces of the thoracic cage

Q

What ist he function of type 1 pneumocytes?

A

gas exchange

17
Q

What is the function of type 2 pneumocytes?

A

they contain lamellar bodies, containing the precursor materials for surfactant
