AP Psych Unit 8 Flashcards
Motivation and Emotion
A need or desire that energizes and directs behavior
Motivation
A complex unlearned behavior that is universal (when we feel hungry our instinct is to eat)
Instinct
Our basic bodily requirements
Physiological need
The concept that a physiological need creates a drive that motivates an organism to satisfy said need
Drive-Reduction theory
Balanced or constant internal state (ex. body regulating its temp)
Homeostasis
A positive or negative environmental stimulus that motivates behavior (ex. love)
Incentive
Moderate arousal leads to optimal performance; a good level of stress can be beneficial to a degree
Yerkes-Dodson Law
Creator of the hierarchy of needs
Abraham Maslow
Pyramid of human needs; base being physiological before safety needs are met, then psychological
Hierarchy of needs
Top of Maslow’s hierarchy; need to find meaning and identity beyond oneself
Self-transcendence
Genetic basis for unlearned, species-typical behavior (such as birds building nests or infants rooting for a nipple)
Instinct theory
Our need to maintain optimal lvl. Of arousal motivates behaviors that meet no physiological need (such as hunger for information)
Arousal theory
The strongest motive; the biological need to eat food
Hunger need
Not an ‘actual’ need, the result of sex hormones ie T and E) as well as sociocultural factors
Sex need
The need to build relationships and to feel as though part of a group
Affiliation need
