reason why a character acts, feels, or thinks in a certain way
Motivation
traditional story that attempts to explain how the world was created or why the world is the way it is; passed down from generation to generation and of unknown authorship
Myth
writing that tells a story
Narrative
lyric poem of some length, usually of serious or meditative nature and having an elevated style and formal structure
Ode
stories of people’s lives related by word of mouth; usually includes factual material and personal reactions
Oral History
form of figurative language combining contradictory words or ideas
Oxymoron
use of similar grammatical constructions to express idea that are related or equal in importance
Parallelism
literary or artistic work that imitates the characteristic style of author’s work for comic effect or ridicule
Parody
figure of speech where animals, ideas, or inanimate objects are given human characteristics
Personification
- exposition- introduces characters and conflicts they face
- inciting incident- after exposition, introduces central conflict
- rising action- after central conflict, complications arise as conflict characters struggle with people or situations
- climax- turning point, point of maximum interest, highest tension in story; usually toward the end when conflict is resolved and outcome of plot becomes clear
- falling action- end of central conflict
- resolution and denouement- after climax and where conflicts are resolved and loose ends are tied up
- subplot-additional minor plot that involves secondary conflict in story; subplot may or may not affect main conflict
