  • exposition- introduces characters and conflicts they face
  • inciting incident- after exposition, introduces central conflict
  • rising action- after central conflict, complications arise as conflict characters struggle with people or situations
  • climax- turning point, point of maximum interest, highest tension in story; usually toward the end when conflict is resolved and outcome of plot becomes clear
  • falling action- end of central conflict
  • resolution and denouement- after climax and where conflicts are resolved and loose ends are tied up
  • subplot-additional minor plot that involves secondary conflict in story; subplot may or may not affect main conflict
