Epigram
long narrative poem about adventures of a hero whose actions reflect the ideals and values of a nation or group
Epic
sudden moment of understanding that causes a character to change or act in a certain way
Epiphany
short poem or verse written in memory of someone
Epitaph
short work of nonfiction that deals with a single subject
Essay
descriptive: describes a particular subject
expository: to explain and give information
formal: highly organized, thoroughly researched
humorous: to amuse or entertain
informal: lighter in tone, usually reflects writer’s feelings and personality
narrative: tells a story
persuasive: convince reader to adopt particular option or course of action
Common Types of Essays
process of judging the value of something or someone; work of literature can be evaluated in terms of such criteria as believability, originality, and emotional power
Evaluating
figure of speech that composes two unlike things over a period of space that may be several paragraphs or an entire novel
Extended metaphor
brief tale that teaches a lesson about human nature; often feature animals as characters
Fable
