Blank Verse
fact: statement that can be proven; opinion: statement that reflects writer’s/speaker’s beliefs but can not be proven by proof/evidence
Fact and Opinion
expressions that are not literally true ex. simile, oxymoron, cliché, metonymy
Figurative Language/Figure of Speech
interruption of chronological sequence of event of earlier occurrence; narrative technique that allows writer to present past events during current events to provide background
Flashback
traditions, customs, and stories passed down within a culture; contains various types of literature such as legends, myths, fables, folktales
Folklore
simple story passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth; told primarily to entertain rather than explain/teach a lesson
Folktale
poetry without regular patterns of rhyme and rhythm; used to capture sounds and rhythms of ordinary speech
Free Verse
couplet consisting of two successive rhyming lines that contain a complete thought
Heroic Couplet/Closed Couplet
fiction that explores a past time period and may contain references to actual people and events of the past
