short, simple narrative of am incident, often used for humorous effect or to make a point
Anecdote
writing that attempts to prove the validity of a POV or idea by representing reasoned arguments
Argumentation
extended narrative of an incident in prose or verse in which characters, events, and settings represent abstract qualities in which the writer intends a 2nd meaning to be read beneath the surface of the story
Allegory
explanatory notes added to text to explain, cite sources, or give bibliographic data
Annotation
presentation of 2 contrasting images; ex. “To be or not to be…”
Antithesis
art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques
Rhetoric
word or phrase (including slang) used in everyday conversation and informal writing that is in appropriate in formal writing: ex. can’t, y’all, ain’t, etc.)
Colloquialism
words suggesting implied meaning because of its association in a reader’s mind
Connotation
repetition of identical consonant sounds within two or more words in close proximity: boot, beat, best; or even compound words: fulfill, ping-pong
Consonance
descriptive writing that greatly exaggerates a specific feature of a person’s appearance or facet of personality
