antintidepressants and antipsychotics Flashcards
how do antidepressants work?
work by increasing certain neurotransmitter levels(chemical messengers between nerve cells) to improve communicaton between nerve cells in order to strengthen the circuits which regulate mood. there are different mechanisms and different neurotransmitters targeted(serotonin, norepenephrine, and dopamine.
What are tricyclic antidepressants?
older class of antidepressants, work by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin and norepenephrine, also affect acetylcholine and histamine levels; responsible for certain side effects and why TCAs may be used for conditions other than depression.
amitriptyline
Elavil, tricyclic antidepressant.
Nortriptyline
Pamelor, tricyclic antidepressant.
How do Tetracyclic Antidepressants(TeCAs)work?
older class of antidepressants; similar in structure to the tricyclic antidepressants, exact mechanism is unknown; increase serotonin and norepenephrine, affect other neurotransmitters with side effects.
Mirtazapine
Remeron, tetracyclic antidepressant.
How do Serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitors (SARIs) work?
Work by blocking the binding of serotonin at certain undesired receptors(serotonin antagonist) AND by blocking serotonin reabsorption(reuptake inhibitors); mechanism is not completely understood. older class of antidepressants with less selectivity, they affecct other neurotransmitters with side effects. often used for treatment of insomnia(off label use)
Trazodone
Desyrel,Serotonin Antagonist and Reuptake inhibitor( SARIs)
how do Selective Serotonin Reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
work by selectively blocking the reabsorption of serotonin; less side effects=most popular class. also used for a variety of anxiety related disorders.
Sertraline
Zoloft, Selective serotonin Reuptake inhibitors(SSRIs)
Fluoxetine
Prozac, Selective serotonin Reuptake inhibitors(SSRIs)
Paroxetine
Paxil, Selective serotonin Reuptake inhibitors(SSRIs)
Citalopram
Celexa, Selective serotonin Reuptake inhibitors(SSRIs)
Escitalopram
Lexapro, Selective serotonin Reuptake inhibitors(SSRIs)
how do Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake inhibitors. (SNRIs)
Work by selectively blocking the reabsorption of serotonin and norepenephrine. in addition to depression also used for anxiety disorders, nerve pain, and fibromyalgia.
