Antimicrobial Therapy Flashcards
What is Bactericidal
Kills bacteria directly
What is bacteriostatic
Inhibit growth of susceptible bacteria. Allowing the host defences to eventually cause bacterial death
Narrow Spectrum
The drug is active against a select group of bacteria
Broad spectrum
The drug has a range of activity against Gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
What is the MOA of Amoxycillin
An antibiotics that interferes with bacterial cell wall structure
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by disrupting the ridged cross-link structure causing lysis and cell death
Is bactericidal
What are some ADRs for amoxycillin
nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, candidiasis, allergic reaction
What is the nurses role and patient education when giving amoxycillin
Avoiding excessive prescribing of antimicrobials
Finish full course of antibiotics
Never use leftover antibiotics or another persons antibiotics
