blockade of dopeaminergic sites in the brain
what are the major side effects of antipsycotic drugs?
- anticholinergic effects
- extrapyramidal stimulation resulting in tardive dyskinesia
what do 2nd generation drugs like clozapine do?
- block dope receptor BUT ALSO SERITONIN
- treat neg as well as positive symptoms
- fewer extrapyramidal side effects like tardive dyskinesia
what are the most commonly used antidepressants?
TCAs
*but MAO inhibitors are also used
what are the 2nd generation antidepression drugs?
fluoxetine and trazadone
what is the mechanism of action for antidepressants?
blockade of amine reuptake or alterations of receptor number
*SSRIs block serotonin reuptake selectively

lithium
