Analgesics (NSAIDS and Morphine) Flashcards
what are the analgesic effects of NSAIDS?
aspirin inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins
what are the antipyretic effects of NSAIDS?
aspirin inhibits PG synthesis in the hypothalamic temperature regulation center
how is bleeding time effected by NSAIDS?
NSAIDS inhibit synthesis of thromboxane A2 preventing platelet synthesis
therapeutic effects of aspirin?
pain relief
antipyretic
antirheumatic
anti-inflammatory
toxic effects of NSAIDS?
occult bleeding from GI tinnitus, nausea and vomitting acid-base disturbance/metabolic acidosis dec tubular resorption of uric acid salicylism delerium hyperventilation
what is the difference between aspirin and acetominophen?
acetaminophen lacks anti-inflammatory activity, is hepatotoxic, and does not cause GI upset
what is the difference between aspirin and other antiinflammatories like prednisone?
they are steroids and do not act primarily on PG inhibition
what is the difference between aspirin and ibuprofen?
ibuprofen causes much LESS GI irritation
what is the difference between diflunisal (dolobid) and aspirin?
diflunisal has a longer half-life than aspirin
what is the drug of choice for a feverish child?
acetominophen bc aspirin leads to Reye’s syndrome
which drug most likely causes lever toxicity?
acetomenophen esp when taken with alcohol
what is naloxone used for?
antagonist used to treat overdose
what is methadone?
used in detoxification of morphine addicts
what are the effects of morphine?
respiratory depression euphoria sedation dysphoria analgesia consitpation and urinary retention**********
(they usually said diarrhea for consitpation
or diuresis for urinary retention)
if a patient overdoses on morphine, what happens?
coma
miosis
respiratory depression
