what is antibiotic stewardship?
set of coordinated strategies to improve the use of antimicrobial medication with goals of enhancing patient health outcomes, reducing resistance and decreasing unnecessary cost

too long a course
too low a dose

what are cephalosporins associated with?
increased risk of VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococci)
what antibiotics do not work against ESBL-producing bacteria
penicillin

temocilin or carbapenem (meropenem)
what is ertapenem not active against?
pseudomonas
what does antibiotic resistance mean for prophylaxis?
cannot be done
how long does cellulitis take to go down?
swelling and redness takes a few weeks
antibiotics working if pain and fever go down
signs of sepsis in children
alert talking raised HR raised RR is there infection in these areas
ALWAYS think sepsis in a child presenting acutely
where is strep viridans most commonly found?
GI tract
how long are antibiotics given for in staph aureus?
6 weeks
