Anti-Ice, Rain Flashcards
When is Engine Anti-Ice required?
Required during icing conditions, on the ground or in the air.
What is the definition of icing conditions?
Icing conditions exist when OAT (on the ground) or TAT (in flight) is 10 degrees C or below and:
- Visible moisture is present (clouds, fog with visibility less than 1sm, rain snow, sleet, ice crystals, etc) or,
- standing water, ice, or snow is present on ramps, taxiways, or runways
When is wing anti-ice use required?
For aircraft with or without ice detectors installed, ice accumulation on the flight deck windshield frames, windshield center post, windshield wiper post, or side windows can be used as an indication of airframe icing conditions. Do NOT operate wing anti-ice when the TAT is above 10 degrees C.
When does probe heat operate?
When an engine is operating. (TAT probe is only heated when airborne)
On “square switch” airplanes, describe the proper switch positions for wing and engine anti-ice during icing conditions, on the ground and in the air.
On the ground- wing OFF, engines ON.
In the air- wing ON or OFF as required, engines ON. Wing anti-ice, if required, is selected ON during the after takeoff flow.
On “selector” airplanes, describe the proper selector positions for wing and engine anti-ice during icing conditions, on the ground and in the air.
On the ground- wing OFF, engines ON.
In the air- AUTO/AUTO/AUTO, accomplished on the after takeoff flow.
On “square switch” airplanes, describe the proper switch positions for wing and engine anti-ice when NOT in icing conditions, on the ground and in the air.
Ground and airborne- all switches OFF
On “selector” airplanes, describe the proper selector positions for wing and engine anti-ice when NOT in icing conditions, on the ground and in the air.
Ground- wing OFF, engines AUTO
In the air- AUTO/AUTO/AUTO, accomplished on the after takeoff flow.
When will ice detection system EICAS advisory messages be displayed? (Switch equipped aircraft only)
Advisory messages will appear as the ice detection system cycles, ICE DET ON, and ICE DET OFF.
When is wing anti-ice operation inhibited?
On the ground.
Which source(s) of pneumatic air should be used for engine and wing anti-ice?
Engine bleed air MUST be used for engine anti-icing, APU bleed air is insufficient.
Since the APU bleed air is insufficient for engine anti-icing, how should the bleed system be configured during single engine taxi in icing conditions?
If engine anti-ice is required on during single engine taxi, only run one pack while engine anti-ice is in use.
What does an amber illuminated CAPT/FO PITOT light mean?
Probe is not being heated, or neither engine is running on the ground.
On a “square switch” airplane, what does an amber illuminated ICING light mean?
Ice detection system indicates ice build up on the airplane.
On a “selector” airplane, what does an amber illuminated ICING light mean?
Engine/wing icing is detected and either:
- engine or wing anti-ice is manually selected OFF, or,
- an anti-ice valve is closed (accompanied by associated VALVE light)
