ANS Anatomy Flashcards
what fibers run in the vagus nerve
parasympathetic preganglionic efferent fibers
visceral afferent fibers
where are the cell bodies of the fibers in the vagus nerve
brainstem: parasympathetic preganglionic
nodose ganglion: visceral afferents
what organs does the vagus nerve innervate
thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic organs
what neurotransmitter does the vagus nerve use
ganglions: ACh
afferents: glutamate
what nerve fibers run in the sympathetic trunk
sympathetic pre and postganglionics
where are the cell bodies of the fibers in the sympathetic trunk
thoracolumbar spinal cord: preganglionic
paravertebral, prevertebral, and rostral sympathetic trunk ganglia: postganglionic
what organs does the sympathetic trunk innervate
blood vessels and glands of somatic structures
visceral structures
eye
salivary glands
lacrimal glands
what neurotransmitters do the fibers in the sympathetic trunk use
preganglionic: ACh
postganglionic: NE/Epi
what nerve fibers run in the thoracic (greater) splanchnic nerve
sympathetic pre and post ganglionic
spinal visceral afferents
where are the cell bodies of the fibers in the thoracic (greater) splanchnic nerve
thoracolumbar spinal cord: preganglionic
paravertebral ganglia: postganglionic
dorsal root ganglia: spinal afferents
what organs does the thoracic (greater) splanchnic nerve innervate
thoracic and abdominal viscera
what neurotransmitters do the fibers in the thoracic (greater) splanchnic nerve use
preganglionic: ACh
postganglionic: NE/Epi
name 3 prevertebral ganglia
- celiac ganglion
- cranial mesenteric ganglion
- caudal mesenteric ganglion
where do the fibers from prevertebral ganglia innervate
abdominal and pelvic viscera
what fibers are in the prevertebral ganglia
sympathetic
where do the fibers from paravertebral ganglia innervate
all sympathetic outflow
where are the paravertebral ganglia
located segmentally along the spinal cord (sympathetic trunk)
how does a sympathetic nerve innervate a pelvic organ
thoracolumbar spinal cord –> sympathetic trunk –> paravertebral OR prevertebral (caudal mesenteric) ganglion –> pelvic organ
how does a sympathetic nerve innervate an abdominal organ
thoracolumbar spinal cord –> sympathetic trunk –> paravertebral or prevertebral (any) ganglion –> abdominal organ
where does sacral parasympathetic outflow occur
from sacral spinal cord (splanchnic nerve)
parasympathetic preganglionic neurons exit and innervate pelvic organs/caudal parts of GI tract
where does cranial parasympathetic outflow occur
cranial nerves III, VII, IX, X
vagus extends to thoracic, abdominal, and some pelvic
others innervate cranial structures
what is the vagosympathetic trunk
vagus nerve + sympathetic trunk that run in the same connective tissue sheath
NO overlapping innervation; just anatomically close
