ANS Flashcards
what is the effector of the somatic NS
skeletal muscle
what is the effect of the somatic NS
excitation
what is the motor neuron path of somatic NS
2 motor neurons (1 in CNS)
what NT is released by the somatic NS
Ach: acetylcholine
what is the effector of the autonomic NS
cardiac muscles, smooth muscles, glands –> visceral effectors
which NS is self governing and which is voluntary
Somatic: voluntary control
autonomic: self governing –> operates without conscious control
what is the effect of the autonomic NS
regulate visceral activities by exciting or inhibiting activities in effector tissues
what is the NT released for ANS
acetylcholine and epinephrine
what is the motor neuron path of the ANS
3 motor neurons (2 in CNS)
what are the lengths of the pre/post ganglionic fibers in the sympathetic NS
short pre
long post
what are the lengths of the pre/post ganglionic fibers in the parasympathetic NS
long pre
short post
what is the function of the sympathetic NS
stimulates organs to inc the activity - excitation
is the sympathetic NS anabolic or catabolic
catabolic –> takes larger structures and breaks them down into smaller units
where does the sympathetic NS originate
thoracic lumbar region
describe the effects of the sympathetic NS
widespread (b/c HIGHLY BRANCHED) and long lasting (b/c adrenal medulla releases epinephrine into BLOOD STREAM)
what is the sympathetic chain
paired bundle of nerves that extend from the base of the skull
what are the 3 types of path of the sympathetic chain
- axon synapses direction to the first postganglionic neuron it reaches
- axon travels up/down to lower/higher ganglion before synapsing with postganglionic neuron
- axon travels thru chain without synapsing until it reaches periphery ganglions and releases to visceral effectors
what is the function of the para NS
to dec the organs activity - inhibition –> enhances rest and digest activities
is para NS anabolic or catabolic
anabolic
where does the para NS originate
cranial and sacral regions
describe what the effects of the para NS are like
localized and short term
what are the target systems controlled by in the para NS
75% are controlled by the vagus nerve
what are the NT released by the sympathetic NS
acetylcholine at ganglion, epinephrine at target
what are the NT released by the para NS
acetylcholine at ganglion and target
