Animal Tissues Flashcards
What are the three types of stem cells?
Totipotent-means you have all the potential in the world
Pluripotent-can become so many tissue cells but not all of them
Multipotent-More than one, but can’t be anything you want
4 types of tissues
1. What is Epithelial?
- Lines cover and protect other tissues and organs, like the skin.
- Made of cells that are tightly connected, forming a barrier.
What are the three types of epithelial tissue?
1.Simple squamous-small cells that look like pancakes
2.simple cuboidal-thicker, looks like cubes
3.simple columnar-looks like columns
Types of tissues
2.What are muscle tissues and the three types?
Tissues with cells and fibers that are made for contractions.
- Smooth tissue - long, thin cells arranged in sheets of muscle.
- Cardiac muscle - branched cells found only in the heart.
- Skeletal muscle - attached to bones to help move them, with long, parallel cell fibers that match the length of the muscle.
Types of tissues
3.what is the nervous tissue?
helps send signals between different parts. It is made up of cells called neurons, which carry messages, with the help of other cells.
-Median nerve compressed leads to numbness, tinging and pain
Types of tissues
4. What is connective tissue
-Any tissue that protects, supports and binds other tissues together
-very diverse tissue type
-tendons attache muscle to bone
-ligaments are bone to bone
What are types of connective tissue?
-bone, fat, blood, tendons, ligaments, cartilage
-Cartilage is there for structure, places where you wouldn’t want to put bone.
-Ridged and flexible
How do the tissues relate to health?
- Epithelial Tissue: This tissue protects organs. If it’s damaged, it can lead to infections or diseases.
- Connective Tissue: It supports and connects other tissues. Healthy connective tissue is needed for proper organ and joint function. Problems can cause issues like arthritis.
- Muscle Tissue: This tissue helps with movement. If muscle tissue is unhealthy, it can lead to weakness or trouble moving.
- Nervous Tissue: this tissue helps with communication in the body. Damage can cause issues with the nervous system.
What tissue is responsible for peristalsis?
the smooth muscle is found in various organs (ex. Stomach, intestines), including the digestive tract, where it helps move food along through peristalsis.
How do cells become specialized?
Cells become special by getting signals from their surroundings. These signals tell the cells which genes to turn on, leading them to become specific types of cells.
How does your muscles grow?
When you work out, your muscle fibers get tiny tears. Your body repairs these tears, making the muscles stronger and bigger.
What is a Haversian Canals?
Allows bone to get oxygen and nutrients without being highly vascular
Blood vessels go through them
What is a tissue?
A group of cells preforming the same function
What is an organ?
2 or more tissues creating a structure that preforms the same function
What is an organ system?
2 or more organs trying to accomplish the same goal
