Angioedema Flashcards
1
Q
What is Hereditary Angioedema (HAE)?
A
Autosomal dominant condition with low C1 (C1-INH) Protein.
2
Q
What is C1-INH?
A
Multifunctional serine protease inhibitor - uncontrolled release of bradykinin (oedema of tissues).
3
Q
Clinical Features of Angioedema (3).
A
- Painful macular rash.
- Painless, non-pruritic swelling of SC/sub-mucosal tissues.
- Airways, Skin, Abdominal Organs.
4
Q
Investigations of Angioedema.
A
- C1-INH : Low.
2. C2 and C4 : Low (C4 most reliable).
5
Q
Management of Angioedema (2).
A
- Acute : IV C1-INH Concentrate or FFP (not Adrenaline, Antihistamine, Steroids).
- Prophylaxis : Anabolic Steroid : Danazol.
6
Q
Pathophysiology of Angioedema (2).
A
- Bradykinin = blood vessel dilation and increased permeability (angioedema).
- C1 Esterase : Inhibits Bradykinin.
