Anatomy W8 - Submandibular Region Flashcards
Name the muscles present in the submandibular region.
Anterior and posterior belly of digastric - joined by a central tendon ** look for this when identifying
Stylohyoid
Mylohyoid
Geniohyoid
What is the function of the anterior and posterior belly of digastric? What is the function dependant on?
Function depends on what the muscles around it are doing.
Raise the hyoid bone - when digastrics contract the central tendon raises and takes the hyoid bone with it since the hyoid is attached to the central tendon via a sleeve of fascia.
Depresses the mandible - if the strap muscles are fixing the hyoid bone in place
Where does the posterior belly of digastric attach to the base of the skull?
Medial to the mastoid process
Where does the anterior belly of digastric attach?
The digastric fossae of the inner inferior aspect of the mandible
(one on each side)
Where does the stylohyoid attach?
Origin -The styloid process of the temporal bone.
Attaches - the hyoid bone
Describe the origin and the attachment of the mylohyoid muscle.
Origin - the mylohyoid line of the mandible
Has a free end
What does the mylohyoid separate?
The floor of the mouth from the Submandibular region
