Anatomy W7 - Soft & Hard Palate Flashcards
What nerve is the MUCOSA of the pharynx supplied by?
The glossopharyngeal nerve
What nerve are the constrictor muscles of the pharynx innervated by?
The vagus nerve
What type of muscle are the constrictor muscles of the pharynx?
Skeletal muscle - under reflex control*** (not usually the case)
Where is the stylopharyngeus muscle found?
Between the superior and middle constrictors.
What nerve supplies the stylopharyngeus?
The glossopharyngeal nerve
List the muscles of the soft palate.
The levator veli palatini
The tensor veli palatini
Palatopharyngeus
Uvular muscles
Palatoglossus - technically a muscle of the tongue but brings the soft palate down as opposed to moving the tongue up.
What nerve supplies the muscles of the soft palate? What is the exception?
The vagus nerve
EXCEPT the TENSOR levator palatini - supplied by the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve
How many bones form the boney palate? Name them.
4
The palatine processes of the maxilla x2
The horizontal plates of the palatine bones x2
Describe the anatomy of a female bony palate.
Bony palate is more narrow and parabola shaped.
What is the function of the levator veli palatini?
Raises the soft palate
What muscles have at attachment to connective tissue instead of bone?
Temporalis - fascia of the temporal fossa
Levator veli palatini - palatal aponeurosis
The buccinator - pterygomandibular raphe
(Superior) constrictor - pharyngeal raphe
What nerve supplies all motor innervation to the pharynx?
What is the exception?
The vagus
Exception - stylopharyngeus - glossopharyngeal nerve
What nerve gives sensory supply to the pharynx?
What are the exeptions?
the glossopharyngeal nerve
Exceptions:
Superior and anterior nasophahrynx - maxillary branch of the trigeminal
Inferior aspect of the laryngopharynx - the internal branch of the vagus
