anatomy quiz #7 Flashcards
Sagittal suture
interlocking joint formed by the intersection of the two parietal bones at the midline of the skull.
Coronal suture
interlocking joint formed at the intersection of the two parietal bones with the frontal bone; also called the frontal suture
Squamous suture
interlocking joint formed by the intersection of temporal bones with the parietal bones
Lambdoid suture
interlocking joint between the occipital bone and the parietal bones.
carotid canal
the internal carotid artery runs, supplying blood to most of the brain.
optic canal
allows the optic nerve to pass to the eye, and the slitlike superior orbital fissure
Hyoid bone
neck bone suspended by ligaments; does not articulate with any other bone.
Vertebral column
the spine, formed of a number of individual bones called vertebrae and two composite bones
Intervertebral discs
the discs of fibrocartilage between the vertebrae.
Lordosis
the abnormal curvature of the lumbar spine in an anterior direction.
Scoliosis
the abnormal curvature of the spine in a lateral direction.
Kyphosis
hump formed by the abnormal curvature of the thoracic spine in a posterior direction.
Sacrum
bone made up of five fused bones; forms the posterior of the pelvis.
Coccyx
three to five fused bones forming the inferior section of the spine; tailbone.
Cochlea
Sternum
breastbone; flat bone composed of the manubrium, body, and xiphoid process.
Humerus
long bone of the upper arm; articulates with the scapula to form the shoulder joint and the radius and ulna to form the elbow joint.
Clavicle
collar bone; part of the pectoral girdle that attaches medially to the manubrium and laterally to the scapula.
Carpal
(1) one of the eight bones of the wrist; (2) pertaining to the wrist.
Phalanges
the bones of the finger or toe.
Radius
lateral forearm bone; articulates with the capitulum of the humerus at the elbow and the carpals distally.
Xiphoid process
he most inferior of the three bones making up the sternum; begins as hyaline cartilage and gradually ossifies throughout adulthood.
Scapula
triangular bone of the pectoral girdle that articulates with the clavicle and humerus.
Ulna
medial bone of the forearm; articulates with the trochlea of the humerus and the carpals
Ischium
inferior bone of the hip; “sit bone.”
Ilium
large flaring bone of the hip; the most superior bone of the pelvis.
Immune response
Pubic symphysis
cartilaginous joint formed at the anterior of the two hip bones where the pubis bones articulate.
Foramen
a hole or opening in a bone or between body cavities.
Calcaneal
pertaining to the heel of the foot.
Joint
the junction of two or more bones; an articulation.
