anatomy #4 Flashcards
Apical surface
exposed to the bodys exterior or to the cavity of an internal organ
Basement membrane
a structureless material secreted by both the epithelial cells and the connective tissues cells deep to the epithelium
Goblet cells
individual cells that produce mucus
Mucous membranes
membrane that forms linings of the body cavities open to the exterior
Endocrine glands
glands that empty their hormonal products directly into the blood
Gland
an organ specialized to secrete or excrete substances for further use in the body or for elimination
Secretion
the passage of material formed by a cell to its exterior , call product that is transported to the cells exterior
Vascularized
to develop or extend blood vessels
Avascular
having few or no blood vessels
Exocrine glands
glands that have ducts through which their secretions are carried to a body surface
Bone
tissue is composed of osteocytes sitting in cavities called lacunae
Tendons
dense fibrous tissue attaching a muscle to a bone
Hyaline cartilage
has abundant collagen fibers hidden by a rubbery with a glassy blue white appearence
Fibrocartiliage
form the cushion like discs between the vertebrae of the spinal column
Elastic cartilage
is found in structures with elasticity such as the external ear
Ligaments
connect bones to bones at joints
Apocrine gland
less numerous type of sweat gland its secretions contain water salts fatty acids and proteins
Muscle tissue
one of four main tissue types specialized to contract in order to produce a force that will cause movement
Edema
an abnormal accumulation of fluid in body parts or tissues causes swelling
Intercalated discs
specialized connections for communication between cardiac muscle cells containing gap junctions and desmosomes
Regeneration
replacement of destroyed tissues by the same kind of cells
Fibrosis
involves repair by dense connective tissue that is by formation of scar tissue
Neoplasm
new growth may be begin or malignant and cancerous
Hyperplasia
certain body tissues may enlarge because there is some local irrantant that stimulates the cells
Atrophy
decrease in size can occur in an organ or body area that loses its normal stimulation
Granulation tissue
delecate pink tissue composed largely of new capillaries that grow into the damages area from undamged blood vessels nearby
Inflammation
injured tissue cells and other release inflammatory chemicals that make the capilaries very permeable
Neuroglia
nonneuronal tissue of the central nervous system that performs supportive and other functions
Stroma
supporting framework of an organ of connective tissue
extracellular matrix
nonliving material in connective tissue consisting of ground substance and fiber that separate the living cells
