Anatomy Flashcards
Understand your anatomy for proper form and alignment in class
Leave no muscle…
untouched
defining the core
the powerhouse, cylinder of muscle supporting the spine and pelvis that connects the lower and upper limbs
major muscles of the core
abdominals, diaphragm, spinal extensors, pelvic floor
minor muscles of the core
latissimus dorsi, gluteus maximus, trapezius
what is core stability?
keeping the pelvis and spine in the desired position while moving the limbs or whole body through space without undesired distortions
front body muscles
diaphragm, abdominals, pelvic floor
back body muscles
trapezius, latissimus dorsi, gluteus maximus
transverse abdominus (TVA)
deepest abdominal muscle, wraps the core deep down
Internal and external obliques
create a criss-cross pattern to aid in lateral flexion, rotation of the spine, and support of trunk and back
rectus abdominous
2 parallel muscles that are vertical along the anterior wall of the abdomen, fibers run up and down, creates intra-abdominal pressure, major postural muscle
linea alba
tissue that separates rectus abdominus
pelvic floor
resists pull of gravity to protect lower organs
diaphragm
main respiration muscle, dome shape
quadratus lumborum
deep quadrangular muscle running from top of pelvis along lumbar spine to bottom rib
multifidus
stability muscles for each segment of the spine
