Superior
Meaning: above
Example: the nose is superior to the chin
Inferior
Meaning: below
Example: the lips are inferior to the nose
Ventral/Anterior
Meaning: belly side
Example: the breasts and knees are on the ventral/anterior side of the body
Dorsal/Posterior
Meaning: back side
Example: the buttocks and knuckles are on the dorsal/posterior side of the body
Distal
Meaning: greatest distance away from a point of insertion
Example: Lesion A is distal from the shoulder
Proximal
Meaning: closest to a point of insertion
Example: Lesion C is proximal to the shoulder
Lateral
Meaning: away from the midline
Example: the ears are lateral to the nose
Medial
Meaning: toward the midline
Example: the nose is medial to the ears
