Why is it important to describe structures using proper anatomical position?
So you always know where a structure is in reference to another.
What is proper anatomical structure?
- toes facing forward
- feet parallel
- arms at side
- palms supenated
Sagittal
Divides body left to right
- posterior is toward the back
- anterior is toward the front
- superior is toward the top
- inferior is toward the bottom
Frontal
Divides the body front to back
- medial is toward the midpoint
- lateral is away from the midpoint
- proximal is toward the trunk or nearest point of attachment
- distal is away from the trunk or nearest point of attachment
Transverse
Divides the body into upper and lower
- superficial is toward the surface
- deep is toward the center
