Anaerobes Intro Quiz Flashcards
What is an Obligate aerobe and examples?
Requires O2; Pseudomonas app. and Micrococcus spp.
What is a microaerophile and examples?
Reduced need for O2 and increased CO2 for growth, Campylobacter spp.
What is a facultative anaerobe and examples?
Most aerobes, under aerobic or anaerobic conditions, E. Coli and Staphylococcus aureus
What is an aerotolerant anaerobe and examples?
Best in anaerobic can tolerate O2 (tricky) Clostridium tertitum, C. cranes, C. histolyticum
What is a Moderate Obligate anaerobe and examples?
Most anaerobes, Tolerate moderate exposure to O2, Bacteroides Fragilis
What is a strict obligate anaerobe and examples?
Killed by O2, Clostridium novae and C. Haemolyticum
Identify sites of normal anaerobe flora.
Colon, Saliva, tooth scrapings, nasal washing, vaginal secretions, Skin, GI tract, Nose, Soil
What is an Endogenous infection?
Most common, comes from ones own flora
What is an Exogenous infection?
From soil or ingestion of contaminated food
What specimens are acceptable for anaerobe culture?
Needle aspirates at active site, Tissue, Blood, Deep respiratory, Stool only for C. Difficile, Normally sterile sites except Urine
What Specimens are UNacceptable for anaerobe culture?
Voided urine Upper respiratory tract, Upper respiratory (sputum included), Stool except for C. Difficile, Vaginal.Cervical, Surface wounds or outside ulcers
Why are aspirated samples preferred over swabs?
Go directly into an acerbic environment
What are the 3 requirements for anaerobe media?
Vitamin K, Hemin and Yeast Extract
What are the conditions necessary for anaerobic media?
Stored in a holding chamber for one hour or placed in the anaerobic chamber immediately.
Why is ABAP used?
Grows almost everything (non-selective)
