Amino Acids, Proteins and DNA: Proteins - Enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
What type of biological molecule are enzymes?
A
- Proteins
2
Q
Active sites of enzymes stereospecific. What does this mean?
A
- Active site has a specific shape
- Enzyme will only bind to one enantiomer of a substrate
- Will have no effect on the other optical isomer
- Like how your left shoe won’t fit on your right foot
3
Q
How do drugs act as enzyme inhibitors?
A
- Drug with a similar shape to substrate is produced
- Drug binds to enzyme’s active site
- Substrate cannot bind to active site, so reaction cannot be catalysed
4
Q
How can drugs be made to act as enzyme inhibitors?
A
- By using computers
