Alzheimers Flashcards

1
Q

How do acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors work ?

A

Donepezil, rivastigmine and galantamine all prevent an enzyme called acetylcholinesterase from breaking down acetylcholine in the brain. As a result, an increased concentration of acetylcholine leads to increased communication between nerve cells.

Q

How do NMDA receptor antagonists work in Alzheimers?

A

In alzhiemers excessive NMDAR activity causes excitotoxicity and promotes cell death,

NMDA receptor antagonist bind directly to the glutamate site of the NMDA receptor to inhibit the action of glutamate.
