Airframe Flashcards
What effect can misalignment have on an aircraft?
Seriously affects flight quality and handling
When would you do a symmetry check on an aircraft?
-any major structural repair
-severe conditions occurred such as heavy landing, severe turbulence, violent manouvres etc
-unusual flight characteristics reported
-wrinkling or buckling of structural skins
-loose or sheared fasteners
-areas of badly fitting access & inspection panels
How is alignment of wings typically checked?
Using transit & plum bobs or theodolite & sighting rods
What do typically alignment checks include?
-wings dihedral angle
-wing incidence angle
-verticality of the fin
-engine alignment
-symmetry check
-horizontal stabiliser incident
What two tools can be used to check dihedral?
-special dihedral board with spirit level incorporated
-straight edge with adjustable level
What tool is used to check incidence?
Incidence board
What tool do you use to check fin verticality?
String or tape measure lateral datum
What are he 3 steps in checking engine alignment?
-check offset
-check measurements
-compare to permissible limits
Name the 4 effects of misalignment?
-changed flight characteristics
-impaired safety,control & operation
-rate of climb, stall & slow speed affected
-causes unpredictability
