Air Systems Flashcards
Which valves will receive a close command when the DITCHING pushbutton is depressed (ARPO)?
The operating CPC sends a “close” signal to the Outflow Valve, emergency
ram air inlet, avionics ventilation inlet and outlet (extract) valves, and the
pack flow control valves, which are all located below the aircraft floatation
line.
NOTE: The Outflow Valve will close only when the pressurization system is in automatic mode. It will not close automatically if it is under manual control.
Will the DITCHING pushbutton always close the outflow valve?
No
The Outflow Valve will close only when the pressurization system is in automatic mode. It will not close automatically if it is under manual control.
Can the pilot control the outflow valve?
Yes
If both automatic systems fail, the Flight Crew may use the CABIN PRESS control panel to take over manual control of cabin pressurization.
• Release the MODE SEL pushbutton to select MAN, and
• Push the MAN V/S CTL switch UP or DN to increase or decrease cabin altitude
The first of these actions cuts off power to the AUTO motors and enables the MAN motor to control the outflow valve.
How many controllers are in the pressurization system?
Two identical, independent, digital cabin pressure controllers (CPCs) automatically control
the system by maintaining the proper cabin pressure.
How do you manually switch controllers?
Selecting the MODE SEL pb to MAN for at least 10 seconds, then returning it to AUTO allows switching between the two CPC Systems.
What does an amber FAULT light in the CABIN PRESS MODE SEL pushbutton indicate?
The FAULT will appear in amber along with the related ECAM caution when both automatic systems are faulty.
From what source does the pressurization system obtain landing elevation?
Air pressure in the cabin follows external schedules that the system receives as signals from the Flight Management and Guidance System (FMGS).
What protects the airframe from excessive cabin differential pressure?
Two independent pneumatic safety valves prevent cabin pressure from going too high (8.6 psi above ambient) or too low (1 psi below ambient) to protect the airframe from excessive cabin differential pressure.
How many outflow valve motors are installed?
one outflow valve, with an actuator that incorporates three motors (two for automatic operation, one for manual operation)
What flow rate is automatically selected when APU bleed air is in use or during single pack operation?
Whatever the crew selects, the system delivers HI (120%) flow for any of the following circumstances:
• In single-pack operation,
• When the APU is supplying bleed air
When should the PACK FLOW selector not be in the normal position?
LO should be selected with less than 115 passengers onboard for fuel savings. The HI position can be selected for hot and humid conditions or as directed for smoke ventilation.
LO: 80% flow for less than 115 passengers (140 passengers A321)
NORM: 100% flow
HI: 120% flow for high demand conditions
If the engine bleed air in-flight is too low what will occur?
When the cooling demand in one zone cannot be satisfied due to low bleed pressure, the air conditioning system controller sends a pressure demand signal to both Engine Interface Units (EIU) to increase the minimum idle and to raise the bleed pressure.
What would cause an amber FAULT light to illuminate in the PACK 1 and/ or Pack 2 pushbutton (OOD)?
The FAULT light comes on amber, and a caution appears on the ECAM, if the:
- pack flow control valve position disagrees with the selected position,
- or in the case of compressor outlet overheat
- or pack outlet overheat.
At what cabin differential pressure does the RAM AIR valve open?
The ON light comes on white and the emergency ram air inlet opens provided:
• the DITCHING pb is in the normal OFF, (lights out) position
• differential pressure is < 1 psi
What causes the Pack Flow Control valve to automatically close?
The pack valve will close for the following:
1. Low bleed pressure
2. Compressor outlet overheat
3. Associated FIRE pb is pressed
4. DITCHING pb is selected ON
5. Engine start sequence as follows:
If the crossbleed valve is closed, the valve located on the starting engine side immediately closes when the MODE selector is set to IGN (or CRK).
It remains closed on the starting engine side (provided the crossbleed valve is closed) when:
• The MASTER sw is set to ON (or MAN START pb set to ON)
• The start valve is open
• N2 < 50%
NOTE: If the crossbleed valve is open at engine start, both pack flow control valves close.
On the ground, reopening of the valves is delayed for up to 60 seconds to avoid a supplementary pack closure cycle during second engine start.
When the mode selector is out of the AUTO position, how do you set a landing elevation?
The crew only needs to select the landing field elevation. In this semi-automatic mode, the pressurization system uses the manually-selected landing field elevation for internal schedules.
