Air Pollution Flashcards
ADEQ
Arizona department of environmental quality, provides reading at statewide reading stations .
EPA
Environmental protection agency
Air quality index
0-50 good 51-100 moderate 101-150 unhealthy for sensitive groups 151-200 unhealthy 201-300 very unhealthy 301-500 hazardous
Ozone
Odorless, colorless gas. 03. Good in stratosphere, but bad at ground level.
Atmosphere level
Troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere
Ozone equation
VOC+NOx+Heat+Sunlight=Ozone
Photochemical reaction
Particulate matter
Small airborne solids of varying sizes of particles and liquid suspended in the air
Where does pm come from
Dust soot smoke, that are emitted in the air. Come from natural sources, to human activities
Inversions
An extremely stable layer of the ground level atmosphere that forms over areas. Inversions trap pollutants close to the ground, by having layers of hot air sit abound cold air, and they can’t rise into the atmosphere. Happens I. Valleys and places near the coast. And places with sunny climate , light winds, and mountains
Other gaseous pollutants
So2, no2, co,
VOCs+heat=no2+so2+co
Risks of poor aq
Lung cancer, asthma
Primary and secondary pollutants
No2’ hno3, so2 so3
Types of air pollution
Ozone Particulate matter CO NOx SOx
