Air Flashcards
What are the gases that make up air?
Nitrogen, Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Noble Gas, Water Vapor and others.
How do you quantify the composition of a mixture of gas?
We use a value which is called the volume fraction of gases in the mixture.
What is The Volume Fraction of a Gas?
A quantity that shows what part of the total volume of the mixture is occupied by a given gas.
What is the composition of a 100 liters of air?
78 liters Nitrogen
21 Liters Oxygen
0.03 liters Carbon Dioxide
0.97 liters of Noble Gases
How do you calculate the volume fraction of any of these gases in the air?
The volume of each gas should be divided by the volume of air.
What is the formula to calculate Volume Fraction?
Volume Fraction = Volume of gas/ Volume of the mixture ; *100%
Why must rooms where they are a lot of people be constantly ventilated?
This is because the air we exhale contains 16% oxygen, while the carbon dioxide percentage is 4%
How would you calculate the volume of oxygen in 300 liters of air?
You multiply 300 liters by 0.21
How would you calculate the volume of air required to obtain 7L of argon?
We divide the volume of argon (7 Liters) by 0.009 (the volume fraction of argon in 100 L of air)
