What is Aggression?
Any overt verbal or physical act that is intended to injure another living organism either psychologically or physically
What are the 4 components to aggression?
- It is a behaviour, not an emotion or a feeling
- It can be verbal or physical
- It is intended to physically or psychologically harm
- It is directed toward another living organism
What are 3 Modes of Aggression?
- Physical
- Verbal
- Relational
What is Violent Behaviour?
An extreme act of physical aggression that bears no direct relationship to the competitive goals of sport
Relates to incidents of uncontrolled aggression outside the rules of spo
What is Assertive Behaviour?
Forceful, vigorous, and legitimate actions with no intent to injure opponent
Two Types of Aggression
What is Instrumental Aggression?
- Aggression used as a way to achieve a goal
- Injury is impersonal and designed to limit the effectiveness of the opponen

What is Hostile Aggression?
The aggressive act is an end in and of itself
- Primary goal is to injure someone deliberately
Typically preceded by anger
Types of Behaviours Related to Aggression
What are the agressor and victim?
The aggressor usually believes that their behaviour is appropriate where as the victim usually perceives the behaviour as aggressive
What is the relationship between Aggression and Performance?
Some support has been found that aggression facilitates sport performance
- e.g. May pay off to injure or intimidate an opposing player
Other sport research:
- Aggression does NOT facilitate performance
- Aggression elevates a person’s arousal level and shifts attention to non-performance issues
