Those in full-time employment under 18 earned a gross hourly income of £3.47. this is very low compared to £11.69 in the age group 40-49.

Currently, some 235,000 18 to 20 year old workers earn the minimum wage, which is £4.98.
Country’s overall jobless rate
In 2009 the country’s overall jobless rate is 6%, but among 18-24- year olds it is 14% and among 16-17 year olds its 26%.
Minimum wage for different age groups
National Minimum wage is £5.73 an hour, available at the age of 22. Minimum wage for workers aged 18-21 is £4.77 and for workers under the age of 18 its £3.53
Age Discrimination in organizations
A 2005 study by Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development of 2682 managers and personnel professionals, show that age discrimination persists in many organizations. 6 in 10 respondents reported they were disadvantaged at work because of their age.
Unemployment rate for those under 25
In 2001 it was just over 20%.
Pensioners living in poverty (Giddens, 2006)
Between 1998 and 2001, 18% of Pensioners lived in poverty compared to only 7% of the working population.
Pensioners with central heating and a car
According to Age Concern Scotland (2001) in 1998-9, 81% of pensioners had central heating compared to 89% of all households, 13% had a car compared to 95% of all households.
Pensioner households dependent on state benefits
Age Concern - in 1997-98 71% of pensioner households depended on state benefits for at least 50% of their income.
Weekly expenditure of households headed by someone aged 64 to 74.
In 2007 it was £321 of which over 30% was spent on food, domestic energy bills, housing and council tax.
Households headed by someone over 75 - average expenditure
£218 per week, of which almost 40% was spent on food, energy bills, housing and council tax.
Pensioners living in poverty
Poverty is defined as living on 60% of the average income and once housing costs have been paid, in 2010, two million pensioners are living in poverty and half of these are living alone unable to afford fuel.
20 to 24 year olds in poverty
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation found that about 21% of 20 to 24 year olds in the UK are in poverty compared to about 17% of the whole population.
Male household victims of violence
The 1998 British Crime Survey records it at 20.9 for males aged between 16 and 25 compared to 0.2 for males aged between 65 and 74.
