Matza - delinquency and drift
Young people go through a period of ‘drift’ where they are no longer children but not adults. Societies moral bonds are weakened.
Lower class subcultures are concerned with toughness, risk taking and communal activities.
Weakened social bonds - control theory suggests criminal behaviour is likely if bonds to family and society are weakened - more likely in teenagers
Juvenile delinquency
Youth who participates in anti-social behaviour and/or criminal behaviour
Specific procedures are used for dealing with juveniles - juvenile detention centres

Peak age of criminal activity is between the ages of 16-25 years old
Subcultures
The likelihood of a young person belonging to a subculture is high and some subcultures engage in criminal behaviour - more likely to be rebellious

Young people may have few legitimate means available of acquiring material goods

Young people experience status frustration.
They create their own subcultures in which they gain respect from their peers. This leads to delinquency.
Miller
Young people are excluded from many opportunities to succeed.
They create criminal gangs as opportunity structures to succeed in life.
ASBO’s
Given to anyone over the age of 10
Can stop an offender going to a certain area or spending time with certain people
If terms are broken, can be arrested as committing a criminal offence
Designed to protect members of the public and not punishing the offender
