AFO Flashcards
What is a DF SAFO used for?
creates flexion at the knee to avoid hyperextension
DF SAFO and loading response
- goes faster through loading response into stance phase
- prevents foot from landing flat
neutral SAFO used for:
- general stability
- little bit of knee buckling
neutral SAFO and loading response
- won’t allow tibial advancement
- prevents some flexion/slows down flesion moment
neutral SAFO and GRF at knee
- keeps knee more extended
- doesn’t allow pt to collapse as much
PF SAFO used to:
decreases ability to flex the knee
PF SAFO and loading response
- increases time from landing to loading response
- slower to get from IC to LR
PF SAFO and tibia advancement
- can’t advance
- keeps GRF acting anterior to the knee longer
How does a PF SAFO affect swing phase?
- foot is longer
- foot never goes to neutral
Who would use a PF SAFO?
someone with severe buckling/recurvatum
What does a shortened foot plate allow?
toe rocker
normal heel rise, toe-off and swing phase
Who might use a shortened foot plate?
- foot drop
- knee stability issue
Extended foot plate: movement
- eliminates or greatly reduces amount of toe movement
- gives up all rockers
Why would eliminating rocker be worth the limitations?
- if it provides stability during stance
- they’re able to walk
Who might need an extended foot plate?
- someone with spasticity
- any type of input at foot and they curl up (someone we’d think would need a long tongue on the shoe)
