AFO 3 Flashcards
What do DAFOs do?
assist motions while we are moving
What are some types of DAFOs?
- DAFO
- Posterior leaf spring
- Spiral AFO
- DF assist/PF stop AFO
- DF assist/PF stop metal upright
UCBL
University of CA Biomechanics Laboratory
What does a UCBL do?
- controls flexible calcaneal deformities
- stabilizes part of foot where there’s excessive pronation or supination
- rearfoot varus of valgus
What does a UCBL stabilize?
- ankle
- rearfoot
Components of a UCBL are inside this
DAFO (only inside the shoe portion)
A UCBL is actually a foot orthosis, but is considered this
DAFO
What is a DAFO?
little baby AFOs
- complete malleolar encapsulation
- lots of padding
- full toe plate
Why would a DAFO need complete malleolar encapsulation?
- complete stability through foot and ankle
- full stability almost to the point of immobility
DAFO: foot plate
- full
- has cutout for big toe to allow full contact
Who would need a DAFO?
someone with hypertonicity, instability, etc
common with kids
posterior leaf spring: lateral support
- doesn’t cover malleoli
- don’t give lateral and medial support
How does a posterior leaf spring give back energy?
- end of stance to end of toe-off
- recoils to help get foot up and keep from dragging
posterior leaf spring keeps foot in:
neutral
Who would use a posterior leaf spring?
- someone who only has DF issue
- is stable everywhere else
