aerobic capacity/ VO2 max Flashcards
what is aerobic capacity
the ability to inspire, transport and utilise oxygen
what is VO2 max
amount of oxygen you can inspire, transport and utilise in one minute
what physiological make up factors affect aerobic capacity
respiratory system - more alveoli so therefor to more surface area
cardiac system - stronger left ventricle
vascular system - greater elasticity of smooth muscle and more red blood cells
muscular system - capillary density increased around S.O fibres
how does training affect aerobic capacity
increases your VO2 max by 20%
how does gender effect your aerobic capacity
women tend to have smaller lungs than men
how does age affect aerobic capacity
once over the age of 20 every year there is a one percent decrease in your VO2 max
what are the 4 methods of evaluation tests for aerobic capacity/ VO2 max
- multistage fitness test
- cooper test
- Harvard step test
- direct gas analysis
what is the multistage fitness test
- run between 20m cones on depleting beep
- when unable to meet cone record results
what is the cooper test
- run as far as you can in 12 minutes
- record distance
what is the Harvard step test
- step up and down for 3 minutes to a click
- measure HR and compare to normal data
what is direct gas analysis
- direct measure of O2/CO2 Input/Output
- work to exhaustion
- treadmill/row/cycle
advantages of direct gas analysis
- high accuracy and reliability
- sport specific
disadvantages of gas analysis
- expensive/specialist
- not suitable for all (maximal test)
advantages of Harvard step test
- cheap and suitable for most
disadvantages of Harvard step test
- not direct
- sport specific
