How are adverbial clauses reduced (1. version)?
- omit the subject, and use the verb+ ing
- > while he was shopping, he bought a jacket
- > while shopping, he bought a jacket
How are adverbial clauses reduced (reasons)?
- reduce clauses that give reasons, when the verb is in simple past/ present perfect/ past perfect
- simple past -> omit the subordinator (because, since) and the subject, and use the verb+ing (Because he was cautious.. ( being cautious))
- present perfect/ past perfect-> change have to having ( the ing usually begin the sentence) ( since she has gotten help ( having gotten help))
How are adverbial clauses reduced (time clause)?
- reduce a time clause when the verb is in the present progressive or past progressive
- omit the subject and the form of be
- > … while you are going to college (-> while going to college)
- > reduce a time clause with a verb in the simple present or simple past
- omit the subject, and use the verb + -ing
- > … before she realized that shopping was addictive (- before realizing that shopping was addictive)

- to be and the subject (after a conjunction) are shortened
- > When he was in London, ..
- > When in London
